SCG AND THE JOURNEY OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT FOR A BETTER VIETNAM

Operating in Vietnam since 1992, SCG – one of the leading conglomerates in Southeast Asia – has an inspiring journey of sustainable development and social responsibility, thereby actively contributing to the country’s most powerful transformation period.

Together share prosperity with Vietnam

Entering the Doi Moi period, Vietnam has set a goal of economic growth associated with cultural development, human development, improvement of living standards, as well as natural resources and environment reservation. These tasks are implemented through a series of policies that the Vietnam Government has issued over the years, with the support and consensus of the community, social organizations and businesses across the country. Committed to being a role model of corporate citizen, after nearly 30 years of operation in Vietnam, SCG has implemented many programs to support community development, pandemic prevention, disaster relief, environmental conservation, and building a circular economy… towards a better future.

The year 2021 marks an important milestone in the sustainable development journey of SCG in Vietnam as the business has been putting effort to overcome the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic to continue accompanying the development of the country. SCG’s social responsibility activities cover many aspects from training the young generation, improving the quality of human resources, encouraging and calling for the community’s efforts in environment protection, and pandemic prevention… Through these contributions, SCG once again shows the commitments, determination as well as the right development direction of one of the leading conglomerates in the industry.

Supporting education, empowering the young generation

In order to support the development of human resources in Vietnam through education, SCG has implemented the SCG Sharing The Dream scholarship program since 2007. During 14 years, the program has supported tens of billions of dong for more than 5,000 both high school and university students across the country. The program helps them overcome barriers in life to continue pursuing their education, discover themselves, seek open career opportunities, and contribute to their families and society. Not only provide financial support, the SCG Sharing The Dream scholarship is closely accompanied and focused on helping students throughout the study period

In particular, in addition to material support, SCG Sharing The Dream program also comes with many activities such as skills improvement, innovative mindset foundation setting up, and healthy living habits formation for the Vietnamese young generation. Through the years of the program, many young people have identified their passion and career orientation, linked their dreams with the goal of continuing to give back to the community, becoming useful citizens for the society.

The story of Nguyen Quy Huy, one of the young people who received the SCG Sharing The Dream scholarship, is a typical example. Born and raised in a farming family, from an early age, Huy understood the hardships of his grandmother and parents. During his time at school, Huy always had to overcome long and difficult roads by himself to get to class. Besides school, she also has to help her grandmother run a small shop, the main source of income for the family.

The turning point came to Huy when he received SCG Sharing The Dream scholarship in grade 11. Not only was he financially supported to focus on his study, but Huy also participated in seminars, skills training and networking with many young people with the same determination to overcome difficulties and rise up in life. Moreover, in the program, Huy had the opportunity to hear many sincere and attractive sharing from prestigious guest speakers. This has helped him to realize the love for public speaking. Winged to his dream, Huy passed Hanoi University of Science and Technology exam with impressive scores (Math 10 – Physics 10 – Chemistry 9) and together with a friend founded the comprehensive educational organization STA (http://giaoductoandien.com). Through this educational organization, Huy wishes to create a comprehensive learning environment for young students, a hub to provide knowledge and develop skills for young Vietnamese, while maintaining his passion to support the community.

With practical and continuous support from SCG, Huy is not the only case, many other young people are also being supported to understand their dreams, and at the same time empowered to take control of their lives, give back to society.

Promoting the development of circular economy concept

In addition to the devotion of the young generation, SCG is also interested in sustainable development and focuses on promoting the development of a circular economy. In 2020, SCG is one of the first 3 enterprises together with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to sign an agreement to establish a Public Private Collaboration (PPC) on building a circular economy in plastic waste management in Vietnam. This cooperation aims to share knowledge, transfer technology, raise public awareness and promote innovation and creativity to solve the problem of plastic waste on a national scale.

To actualize the commitments in the agreement, SCG has continued to launch the first pilot project on waste separation at source at Long Son 1 and Long Son 2 primary schools, Ba Ria – Vung Tau province. The goal of the project is to increase the rate of waste recycling through waste separation at source, thereby aiming for a future circular economy model.

The participants in the projects of SCG are encouraged to use the mGreen waste sorting application with the function of accumulating points and redeeming gifts to form the habit of waste segregation at school and among the community. In phase 1, the project attracted the participation of 105 teachers, students, and parents, with a total of 138kg of garbage collected. Spreading widely and receiving great response from the community, by the second phase, the number of participants has increased to 414 people; meanwhile, the amount of garbage collected increased impressively by 5.5 times, reaching 754kg. After only a few months of launching, the project has helped collect and sort more than 1.5 tons of garbage, thereby contributing to a new life cycle of waste.

Not only stopping at the figures, more importantly, the project from SCG also contributes to form the habit of sorting waste at source, raising the awareness of environmental protection from the young generation.

Nguyen Phuc Khang, a student at Long Son Primary School shared: “Being a part of this project, my job is to help my friends sort and collect garbage for recycling every Friday and help my family sort it out. household waste. I really like this project because it is very meaningful and contributes to environmental protection. I hope the project will develop further and continue to spread this good spirit. Through this, I also want to send a message of protecting the environment, not littering, and to properly classify wastes into 3 categories: recyclable waste, organic waste, and other types of garbage.”

Initiate from primary school, the idea quickly became a model of waste sorting and recycling that was widely applied in many families and communities, thereby, encouraging people to join hands to act towards the circular economy.

Actively assist the battle against COVID-19

The social responsibility journey of SCG continues to be promoted through activities to support the community to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the nearly two years since the first pandemic outbreak, SCG has continuously supported money and practical initiatives from leading experts in the industry. Besides thousands of medical equipment and supplies such as protective gears, hand ultrasound scanners, portable X-ray machines, 5-parameter patient monitors, electric injection pumps… for authorities across Vietnam. Apart from Hai Duong, Bac Giang, Quang Binh, Da Nang, Quang Tri… in the 4th wave of the COVID-19, the pandemic center is in Southern provinces, SCG also donated billions of VND to the pandemic prevention working in Ho Chi Minh city, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, and Long An.
